Exercise Physiology vs Physiotherapy: Which Is Right for You

Find the Right Care for You: Exercise Physiology or Physiotherapy

Choosing the right service can feel overwhelming, but understanding the difference can help you achieve the best possible outcome. Our team is here to guide you toward the most suitable option based on your individual needs and goals.

Exercise physiology and physiotherapy are both recognised allied health professions. Exercise physiologists primarily treat patients using clinical exercise interventions as their main modality, with a strong focus on behavioural change and long-term self-management.

Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who assess, diagnose, treat, and manage acute injury, disability, and pain using a combination of hands-on techniques, education, and exercise-based rehabilitation.

Both professions are supported by extensive university training and ongoing professional development, and are recognised by Medicare, private health funds, NDIS, motor vehicle accident insurers and self-insured organisations.

Depending on your condition, you may benefit from one service or a combination of both, with physiotherapists and exercise physiologists often working collaboratively to support your recovery and long-term health.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and hands-on treatment of acute injuries, pain, and movement dysfunction. This may include manual therapy, dry needling, and targeted rehabilitation to help you recover safely and efficiently.

If you are dealing with a recent injury or pain, physiotherapy is often the best place to start

Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology, on the other hand, centres on the prescription of structured, evidence-based exercise programs to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and long-term musculoskeletal issues. It is also ideal for building strength, improving function, and preventing future injury.

Exercise Physiology is well suited for ongoing management, rehabilitation, and long-term health outcomes.
